Escalating Violence and Humanitarian Emergency
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is facing a worsening humanitarian crisis as escalating violence in the eastern region has already displaced 237,000 people in 2024. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has raised concerns over the deteriorating situation, particularly in North Kivu and South Kivu, which are at the epicenter of displacement.
Between January 1-6 alone, intense clashes forced 150,000 people to flee North Kivu, while renewed violence in South Kivu displaced another 84,000 individuals. Civilians are caught in the crossfire, enduring:
- Indiscriminate bombings in populated areas
- Sexual violence, particularly against women and girls
- Child casualties as heavy weapons devastate communities
These latest displacements add to the staggering 4.6 million internally displaced people in North and South Kivu—the largest displaced population in Africa.
The reality on the ground is dire. Displaced families are seeking refuge in overcrowded host communities, makeshift shelters, and public buildings, with many lacking basic necessities. However, humanitarian access remains severely restricted due to insecurity and the presence of armed groups.
Despite efforts to return home, many families are forced to flee again due to renewed attacks, leaving them in a cycle of displacement and suffering.
The UNHCR remains committed to providing aid to those in need. In 2024, the agency has:
- Provided emergency shelter to 95,000 people
- Distributed essential supplies to 45,000 individuals
However, urgent support is needed to expand aid efforts. The international community cannot afford to ignore this escalating crisis.
A Call for Global Action
As violence continues to drive displacement and suffering, humanitarian organizations are calling for immediate action. Governments, NGOs, and global donors must step up efforts to:
- Ensure humanitarian access to affected areas
- Provide essential aid—including food, water, shelter, and medical assistance
- Advocate for peace and long-term stability in the region
The crisis in the DRC remains one of the world’s most severe yet underreported emergencies. The displaced families in North and South Kivu urgently need assistance, and the world must respond.
