What was once a blank wall at the Muungano Wa Wanavijiji Kiamaiko Resilience Hub has been transformed into a vibrant symbol of hope, resilience, and community pride through a youth-led mural initiative supported by GIZ. The project engaged young people in creating artwork that reflects the values of unity, belonging, and collective action while giving new life to an important community space.
More than a beautification exercise, the mural represents the strength and aspirations of the Kiamaiko community. Through art, the young participants shared a powerful message of resilience and demonstrated how creativity can inspire dialogue, strengthen identity, and foster a deeper sense of ownership among residents.
The Muungano Wa Wanavijiji Kiamaiko Resilience Hub serves as a space for learning, collaboration, and community-led resilience-building initiatives. The completion of the mural was marked during a launch event attended by residents, youth leaders, local stakeholders, and partner organizations. The occasion celebrated not only the finished artwork but also the collective effort, creativity, and shared commitment that made the project possible.
The success of the initiative was made possible through the collaboration of community partners, including One World Together, Muungano wa Wanavijiji, and Know Your City. Their support highlighted the importance of partnerships in empowering young people and advancing locally driven development initiatives that strengthen communities.
An exchange visit held after the launch provided a platform for peer learning, enabling participants to share experiences, explore community-led resilience approaches, and strengthen networks across organizations and communities. The visit also offered an opportunity to learn more about the role of the hub in supporting collaboration and sustainable community development.
Beyond transforming a public space, the initiative equipped young people with valuable leadership and teamwork skills while encouraging active participation in shaping their own community. By working together on a shared vision, they demonstrated that creativity can be a powerful tool for building stronger, more connected, and more resilient neighbourhoods.
The Muungano Wa Wanavijiji Kiamaiko Resilience Hub is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenartbeit (GIZ) GmbH, through the regional project Resilience Initiative Africa (RIA).
As a permanent feature of the Muungano Wa Wanavijiji Kiamaiko Resilience Hub, the mural will continue to inspire residents and visitors alike. More than a colourful work of art, it stands as a lasting reminder of what can be achieved when young people, communities, and partners work together to create positive and lasting change.
